oh, the madness

raftw63.jpg the man, the myth, the legend; bill raftery

if you’re not a sports fan or if you’ve been living in a cave for the past week, you know march madness is upon us. the ncaa tournament started yesterday, a thursday, leaving many the option to either a) take a vacation day/call out sick b) check scores repeatedly on the internet or c) completely miss the two greatest days of the sports watching season (the first round). but, due to the geniuses at cbs sportsline, you can watch any game currently being played via your computer screen. yes, that’s right, i said any. oh, i forgot to mention, it’s free, too. just create or use a previously created log-in id and password, then launch the player and voila! you are instantly capable of switching between four different basketball games.

you may have noticed, you cannot do this with your television. my current cable provider offers two separate cbs stations, both of which normally carry the same game. cool.

now, not only can i watch these games on my computer while i’m at work, i’m actually tempted to just sit my laptop on my ottoman at home and switch between the three different games that aren’t featured on my cbs television station.

this has to be the single greatest sports-technology innovation since, since … i have no idea. i can’t think of anything that could possibly challenge this. thank you cbs sportsline. you are awesome. i’m surprised i took the time to write this post, considering games are being played as i type.

two sports, two state titles

pryor.jpg

terrelle pryor was at it again saturday afternoon, this time on the hardwood. pryor and the jeannette jayhawks bested strawberry mansion 76-72 in the class aa pennsylvania state basketball championship at penn state’s bryce jordan center. pryor led the jayhawks with 23 points and 8 rebounds.

just this past december, pryor led the jeanette jayhawks football squad to a state title. the highly touted senior remains undecided on his choice of college, citing ohio state, michigan, penn state and oregon as frontrunners.

down seven points early in the third quarter, the jayhawks mustered a two-point lead, 60-58, with just a minute left to play. pryor had a chance to ice it, but missed two free throws leading to mansion’s darren lawrence hitting a pull-up jumper to knot it at 60, sending it into overtime.

jeannette’s jordan hall hit four free throws and a jumper on the break in overtime for a 70-64 lead, essentially banging home the coffin nail.

which leaves the obvious question still looming over everyones’ head: when and where, terrelle, when and where? (update: he’ll decide in a week)

but, i’m not a thief

2-6-5-thief-420.gif

stumbled upon something really funny today. i had a thought last night that marquette university’s basketball coach tom crean possibly looks a lot like dwight schrute from the office (not really). naturally, i googled tom crean and began looking for pictures when i happened upon this. if you’re not a link-clicker, allow me to summarize. that link directs you to a page on espn’s page 2, designated solely for actor/celebrity/athlete lookalikes. there are maybe a couple hundred of them. what makes this funny, is in my typical half-assed way, i did or tried much the same thing here, thinking that maybe it was original, and maybe no one had done this before (i had a feeling i’d be wrong). of course i didn’t do much in the way of searching for previous examples either. well, low-and-behold, the four-letter jerk-store had beaten me to it. i could not be less surprised. hey, at least i owned up to it! ya bastards.

on second thought…

joey.jpg

in a move that surely signals that the atlanta falcons will be just as bad this year as they were last year, the team has decided to re-sign joey harrington following the decision last week to cut the qb. according to the story on espn, the falcons deliberately cut, then re-signed harrington to a lesser contract in order to create more space under the salary cap. however, i prefer my version better. the falcons are incompetent. as of right now, chris redman is listed as their starting quarterback (byron leftwich was released), followed by harrington, followed by d.j. shockley. the same chris redman who got a start last year after not playing a down from 2004-06. the same chris redman who was allegedly brought in as a backup to michael vick because of his ties to former falcons’ coach, former louisville cardinal coach and current piece of crap, bobby petrino. there is always the possibility of another trade or acquiring a qb in the draft, however, i prefer to stick with my original assumption.

in another head-scratcher, the rams signed the uber-concussive trent green to a three-year deal worth $8.9 million. you might remember green for practically getting his head lauped off two seasons ago against the bengals while trying to scamper into the endzone. it resulted in a major concussion and eventually his trade to the dolphins. the dolphins rolled the dice last year, only to come up snake-eyes. green suffered another concussion in week five and was put on injured-reserve for the rest of the season. a few weeks ago the dolphins wisely released him. seemingly unconvinced, the rams decided to throw some more money at the mediocre signal caller. this way, the rams can boast about how “solid” they are at the quarterback position. unless of course, starter marc bulger gets injured, then green is screwed. if bulger gets injured and green has to start two consecutive games, i give him a 100% chance of suffering another concussion. that, or he gets hit in the head with a clipboard on the sideline.

where art thou basketball skills lil’ romeo?

lilromeo_195.jpg

as it turns out, lil’ romeo and lil’ bow wow are altogether different people! who knew?

via deadspin and the wall street journal

normally, i prefer not to lift stories and re-word them from other blogs. however, i had a conversation about this exact topic with a friend who just happens to reads this blog on occasion. we were talking about a usc basketball game that was on tv the other night, started talking about oj mayo, when he asked about lil’ romeo. honestly, until a few weeks ago, i didn’t even know romeo played basketball, much less was any good. turns out, he isn’t. the linked stories go on to basically assert that tim floyd, coach of usc mens’ basketball, gave romeo miller a scholarship because it will put butts in the seats.

“We may have more 11- to 17-year-old girls in the stands than we’ve had in the past,” says Floyd

my question is, if he’s not going to play, does floyd think people will buy tickets just to watch lil’ rom occupy the bench?

here’s to lil’ romeo makin’ em say unggghghh from a folding chair.

where is the stone?

diamond.jpg

ap

how would you like to hold roughly 10 million dollars firmly between your thumb, pointer and middle fingers? according to the caption:

Sophie an employee of Sotheby’s holds a rare pear shaped D-colour flawless diamond weighing 72.22 carats in the auction house in London Friday, March, 7, 2008. The diamond will be sold at auction in Hong Kong on April 10, with an estimated value of some US$10.3 million (Alastair Grant)

suddenly i feel like watching the movie “snatch.”

I have stones to sell, fat to chew, and many different men to see about many different dogs, so if I am not rushing you…

wah

favre.jpg

“i know i can play, but i don’t think i want to.”

if that isn’t the biggest crock of crap you’ve ever heard. brett favre doesn’t want to play football? check out this video and article and tell me without a shadow of a doubt that you believe this man when he says he won’t play football again. i despise brett favre, i really do, but the man has football shaped blood cells. tons of speculation has been floating around about this whole bit. i highly doubt there is any validity to the alleged bitterness about the randy moss deal. he’s got a great core of young, speedy receivers returning as well as a rather stout defense. granted, the pack went 13-3 this past year and haven’t lost any notable players to free agency, but alas, there is no sure thing in the game of professional football. two seasons ago, he had one of the worst years of his career – contemplated retiring – then came back and had one of his best years ever this past season. taking everything into account, not even brett favre knows what kind of season brett favre would have next year. i’m just having an incredibly hard time buying this whole “tearful retirement” show. i’ll believe it next july or august, but right now? not a chance in hell. why so early? let it marinate for a while, brett. no need to rush it.  meh, what do i care. let the aaron rodgers era begin!
